Take Me Back
A Poem
This poem is based on a random photo I solicited in a search. It's a picture of what's leftover in what appears to be an old, abandoned house. There's an old phone on a dirty desk. A broken window, dust everywhere, and a line flower sits beside the phone on the desk.
Imagine a time
Decades ago
Picture if you will
A vibrant scene.
.
Life was being lived
Family and friends gathered
Ballgame on the TV
Smell of cookies filled the air.
.
A phone book lay there
Next to a new rotary phone
The kind you used a single finger
To call for pizza delivery.
.
No AC
The window had a screen
Fresh air blowing
Into an otherwise smoke filled room.
.
Laughter filled the air
Maybe a curse word or two
Love was abound
Unspoken but very obvious.
.
Flash forward to the present
Even the echoes are long gone
What remains
Are memories.
.
Sometimes I close my eyes
Taking me back
To what was a simpler time
When no cares were had.
.
All those days ago
Memories
All that's left
Is an empty room and a lonely silk flower.
.

Such a beautifully nostalgic piece! It really captures the essence of simpler times and the warmth of family gatherings.
Oh, I truly love this poem, Mark. Somehow, it carried me back to those warm summer evenings of my childhood, when I would play soccer with my older brother in the backyard after dinner. Then we’d wander back into the living room — completely exhausted, yet deeply content — feeling satisfied after another beautiful, carefree day.
